It takes one to know one!
With a strategic location adjacent to the important I-4 transportation
corridor, Polk City is enjoying rapid growth of residential
development. It serves as a bedroom community for the city
of Lakeland to the southwest.
Incorporated in 1925, Polk City occupies a low ridge in the
heart of Florida's Green Swamp, a vast area of wilderness
which is an important wildlife and water resource. The area
contains the highest elevations of the Floridan Aquifer, the
source of 90% of the drinking water for the middle Florida
peninsula.
With a population of 1,615 residents, Polk City maintains
its rural flavor, with only limited commercial development.
The town serves as the home of
Fantasy of Flight, an attraction showcasing the history
of mankind's attempts to soar.
Polk City provides a number of amenities for its citizens,
including Freedom Park, which features two basketball courts,
a tennis court, and two racquetball courts. The city also
sponsors summer youth recreation programs during June and
July.
The Town of Polk City is governed by a five-person council,
who elect a mayor and vice mayor from their membership. The
council meets the first Tuesday of each month, at 7:30 p.m.
